Life Lately…

…We arrived back in CA today from our long trip back to MN for Christmas.  We really had such a great time seeing so many of our friends and family.  What a blessing it was that we could spend the time there that we did.  We saw about as many people as we could while there – most days were filled to the brim – and the days just flew by.  The thought of blogging hardly even crossed my mind, which is a sign of a good time I think (too busy to be online!).

my family!

thanks to friends and family for a few pictures – I was terrible about taking any this year!

…I plan to do a wrap-up of 2014 sometime this week, and probably a post about some goals for 2015 as well.  I’ve set goals for the past few years but hadn’t even thought about this next year until Jesse asked me about them earlier today.  Again, I think I’ve just been too distracted!  Are you planning to set goals for the new year?  I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

…Before we left for vacation, Zida had fleas.  We have no idea how she got them and the vet said she probably caught them from just being outside (from a bush, a patch of grass, or just simply walking past another dog).  Luckily they weren’t severe since we caught them early, but I felt really bad for her.  Plus it was a major pain to clean our entire apartment from top to bottom – it was like when a kid gets lice.  Yuck!  Thankfully, she’s been just fine for almost 2 weeks now.

…It’s fun eating out (and eating differently overall) while away but Jesse and I are both happy to be eating out of our kitchen again.  We left with an empty fridge and cupboard so we filled up an entire cart at the grocery store this afternoon.  Home-cooking is where it’s at.

…I’ve been a little crazy over Amy Poehler.  Jesse and I love watching Parks & Recreation together and, after receiving it as a Christmas gift, I’m reading her book Yes Please.  I also just saw a commercial for the 2015 Oscar’s later in January in which she and Tina Fey are hosting – I’ll definitely be watching that on the 11th!
.
….My pair of Asics Gel-Fit Sanas are currently my go-to shoes for nearly everything.  I received my new kicks just before we left for our trip so I happily took them along – I wore them for each flight, to lift weights and walk in, and just for everyday wear.  FYI, they’re not intended to be running shoes.  They’re really comfy, lightweight, flexible, the gel is adapting with an almost customized feel, and the colors are super cute (I love the fashionable neon).  They’re undoubtedly versatile.  My only complaint about them is the laces – they could be longer and if I don’t have them double-knotted tightly they easily come undone.  It’s definitely a high-quality, flexible, comfortable shoe and I’d be happy buying!

What's New…

So as you all have realized, I’ve been absent from the blog for quite a while.  And when I’ve been around in the past month or so, it’s been awfully sporadic.  That’s all because life just got busy.  For a solid month, every one of my days was either chock full from morning to night or I was gone on vacation.  While that may sound exhausting (it totally was), everything I was busy with was good stuff, so it was all enjoyed!

Here’s a little list of what’s been going on, just to keep you in the loop since several of you have asked :)

  • I started a new full-time job!
I’m now working at a chiropractic and nutrition center and I’m absolutely loving it.
My hours for training and the first couple weeks required long days, 7:30am – 6:30pm most days, which was fine, but when everything is new and I was adjusting to the schedule, I was pooped by the time I got home at night.
*this also means I’m no longer nannying, which left me in tears for quite a long time.  I’m glad I’ll still get to see them, but wow it was hard to leave!
  • We went on vacation for 8 days!!  Jesse and I, along with his mom’s side of the family, spent time in Las Vegas and southern Utah – I plan to do a recap post soon, mostly for family and close friends that read and want to know about our trip :)

Angel's Landing - Zion National Park - at the top! vacation with cousins

  • I celebrated my 24th birthday, on May 25th – in Vegas!

24th birthday!

  • As you know, I attended the 2014 Blend Retreat!  That was also my first time flying alone – grateful all went well and I wasn’t too anxious!

20140607_112814

  • Jesse did some traveling out to California.
  • Our close friends Matt & Jenna got married!!!!  Jesse was a groomsman and I was Jenna’s personal attendant.

six friends at wedding!! Jesse, Danica, Jenna, Matt, Brooke, Ben

  • Jesse’s cousin and her husband (our godson’s parents) had their baby!!
  • And I just completed my coursework and passed my final test at IIN – I’m *just* about a Certified Holistic Health Coach!

And that’s the big stuff, you guys!  I know it’s not a big deal when I’m not blogging regularly, but I tend to feel like I need to explain myself.  I think you can understand how the amount of time blogging requires just wasn’t in the cards the past month.

As I figure out my new schedule and get into a good routine of sorts, I’m certainly back to blogging more regularly.  There are some really exciting things I get to share about soon, so be on the lookout for those!

Happy Friday to each of you!  Enjoy your weekend!

It’s Friday and I’m back!

Hello, hello!

I’m sorry I was so absent this week…things were craaaazy busy and I much would have preferred to be here blogging than doing all of the other things I needed to get done :)

Let’s catch up a bit….

1.  I’m officially done with my job and more than ready to move on to new things!

2.  Due to the past (crazy, busy) week, my house is a catastrophe.  And when my house is all messy, I just feel like my whole life is a mess haha I can’t be the only one who feels that way right?
I’m actually really excited to get things organized and clean today!

3.  I’ve kept my runs this week shorter and they’ve all felt great!  I somehow pulled off nearly 8-minute miles on a 4-miler Tuesday, and not much over that on another 4-miler yesterday.  The whole time I felt good so I just went with it, though today’s little 2-miler will be purposefully and significantly slower.  I just kept imagining how awesome it would be to run the entire race at that speed…I can dream! :)

4-miler

4.  And speaking the race – I’ll be running my 3rd half marathon in just 2 days!!!!  I can’t believe it’s this close, and whenever I think about it I get really nervous…Like any other racer, I’ve been checking the forecast ridiculously often.  Right now it’s looking to be about 40 degrees and raining.  Soooo that‘ll be fun.  ;)

5.  Because of said busy week, most of my meals have been in front of the computer while working or actually eaten while working at my job.  Since work is over and I can breathe a little deeper now, I’m making a point of only eating my meals/snacks with no distractions.  No phone, computer, tv, etc. and only the company of others if that’s an option.  I enjoy it so much more and I eliminate any mindless eating!

Overnight OIAJ

6.  Tomorrow is my birthday!   I’m actually not overly excited about it – I feel like the older I get the less enthusiastic I get about birthdays… I will say though, the birthday cards in the mail from family members and gifts from friends are even more appreciated as I get older.  The thought really is what matters!
Due to the race on Sunday, there won’t be any birthday desserts or a dinner out (I’m super careful about what I eat on the days leading up to a race), but I told Jesse that my birthday request was to have cake/dessert ready for me to celebrate with right after I cross the finish line and we go to eat :)

7.  On Wednesday night, my 50 preschoolers graduated and officially became kindergarteners!  I had the hardest time saying goodbye to them all…Somehow, I *only* cried 3 times…
Let me tell you though – when one of your student’s dads comes up to you, and while thanking you for making such a positive impact on his son’s life, starts to tear up, you would cry, too.  That was just the absolute best and most rewarding moment.

sweet card from my student

I received many gifts from my students for the end of the year, which I honestly didn’t really expect?  But it was like Christmas, and I now have more potted flowers than I know what to do with :)  Gosh I’m going to miss them…

8.  Recently I got the opportunity to try out a headband from Danielle – I absolutely love it.  It just does not slip!  I’ll talk more about it next week when I do a review and host a giveaway!!

headband

9.  Last night we (finally) got to celebrate our friends’ (Matt & Jenna) engagement!!  And besides just getting to celebrate, Jesse was asked to be a groomsman and I get to be Jenna’s personal attendant!  We feel so honored to be a part of the wedding…so excited!

10.  Speaking of weddings, my cousin is getting married in just 8 days!!  Geez time is flying….that also reminds me I should probably try on my bridesmaid dress.  I’ve only put it on once and that was in January.  Oops. #notevenalittleworriedthough  Just don’t tell Maegan ;)

11.  Through May 28th, Swanson Vitamins (<-affiliate link) is offering free shipping on all orders over $27!  All you have to do is enter the code “MEMORIAL” at checkout.  This is my absolute favorite site for online food and supplements – the prices are always competitive and I highly recommend checking it out!

12.  This post is getting ridiculously long.  I apparently had a lot to tell you!

I hope everyone has a fantastic, 3-day weekend!!

let’s catch up

Since it’s been a while since I last did a “Friday Randomness” post, and I’ve just been absent from the blog lately, I thought we could play a little catch-up on this morning…

1.  First, I’d like to just point out that the weather is finally starting to warm up here.  The forecast is calling for 40s/50s all week, and no snow!  I’m just so thrilled to be able to go for walks in the evenings again (<–my absolute favorite exercise).

2.  On Saturday, I attended a bridal shower for my cousin Maegan.  She’s getting married on the first of June and I’m a bridesmaid in her wedding…that day will be here soon!

Maegan & I - bridal shower

3.  I have just 7 weeks left at my job, and then we’re done with the school year and I’m moving on.  Most of my close friends and family know this, but it’s not something I’ve talked about on the blog.  I don’t know that I’ll ever share why here, just because that doesn’t necessarily seem appropriate and it’s a combination of a lot of things, but ultimately I’m just really unhappy there and unwilling to go through another year like this….Hopefully something better will be found!  (currently searching…)

4.  I got a deep-tissue massage yesterday, which I do every 4-6 weeks or so (it’s helped nearly eliminate the almost-daily headaches I used to get).  Typically it’s not a very relaxing massage–deep tissue is instense and really works out the kinks on the muscles–but yesterday’s was insanely relaxing…I’m preeeetty sure I fell asleep during it for a little while…and if I’m not sure, that most likely means that I did….oops!

5.  On a sad note, my family’s pet, the dog my siblings and I grew up with, had to be put down this past week :(  She was 14.5 years old (yes, we celebrated her birthday–always on my calendar!)…she started to have a lot of pains, and kind of went paralyzed randomly one night.  My parents said she whined all of that night and the next day, so they decided to put her down.  Angel was thee best dog.

6.  J and I are officially in the market for a new car.  We started our little search yesterday by just browsing around the car lots to get an idea of prices and models we like.  We know we want a 4-door car that gets good gas mileage and obviously is priced at a good value…we’re taking all suggestions! ;)

7.  Speaking of taking suggestions….if anyone reading this has a personal training certification through NASM, I’d LOVE to speak to you…

8.  THIS is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a really long time.  Seriously, go check it out.  It’s beyond adorable.

Liebster Award: My Answers

I was recently nominated for the Liebster Blogging Award by the beautiful blogger behind Jessie Loves to Run!

I’m not following the award rules exactly here, but I decided that answering her 11 questions would be a fun and light-hearted Sunday post, so here we go!

1. What did you want to be when you were younger?

Honestly, the only thing I’ve ever truly wanted to be is a mother and wife.  I know that sounds old-fashioned, and for some reason a lot of people think old-fashioned means bad, but that’s the truth.  When choosing a career though, ever since I was young I’ve wanted to be a teacher.  I guess that worked out pretty well, huh?

2. Do you enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner more?

Breakfast!!  I love to eat any time of the day, but that’s easily my favorite.

3. Are you a clean freak or constantly putting it off?

This depends on what we’re talking about…When it comes to my desk area at home, that’s usually a mess.  But if we’re talking about the kitchen, that’s always being cleaned.  I cannot stand going to bed when the kitchen is messy or there are dirty dishes in the sink!

4. Have you ever had any serious injuries?

I’ve never broken any bones but I was in a bad car accident when I was a kid.  I hit my head badly against the seat in front of me (even though I had my seat belt on) and had a concussion plus a huge bruise on my forehead for weeks–I’m convinced to this day that that’s a major reason why I get headaches so often and have such sensitive eyes.

5. Do you prefer the summer or winter?

Summer for a lot of reasons–the fresh fruit, warm temps, more free time (school was out), etc.  I hate the freezing cold weather we get here in MN and partly because of that J and I still talk about possibly moving out to California in a couple of years, but Fall is my absolute favorite season.

6. If you could meet any celebrity or someone from the past, who would it be?

This is a tough one!  I would love to meet Jillian Michaels (I really admire her), Ellen DeGeneres (she’s hilarious and so kind), and Sandra Bullock (my favorite actress).  I also think it would be really fun to meet some of the bloggers I read about every day!  They’re kind of like celebrities to me haha

7. Are you a sports fan?  If so, who’s your favorite team?

I love watching sports (baseball, tennis, and gymnastics are my favorites) and the Olympics have been SO fun to watch!  I can’t wait for the women’s marathon today.  As far as my favorite professional team though, I’d have to say the MN Twins.  It’s really too bad they’re terrible this year :(

8. Have you ever visited any places outside of the United States?

The summer after 8th grade I took a vacation to San Diego, California with one of my best friends and her family.  We spent one afternoon in Tijuana, Mexico–not exactly a fun experience–but as far as I can remember that’s the only time I’ve been outside of the U.S., unless you can count when I was on the Maid of the Mist in Niagara Falls and technically partly in Canada?

9. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I love this question…In 5 years, I hope that Jesse and I have a baby and possibly a new home, but I don’t even care where we are (I mentioned the possibility of California, remember? :)  If I got to choose I would be a stay-at-home mom doing some sort of part-time work, either teaching or doing something health/fitness related, on the side.  I love imagining the future, but I know from my life in the past 5 years nothing turns out like you imagined (but in only the best way).

10. Which do you like more: running or strength training?

This totally depends on the day.  I love how strong strength training makes me feel, which is funny because up until <1 year ago I never picked up a weight unless I *had* to in high school.  I also discovered how much I love the benefits of running in the past year though so that probably wins over all.  It’s always amazing to me to find out what my body can do–training for that half marathon was easily one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life.

11.What’s your favorite movie?

I can’t choose just one, but some of my favorites include; The Notebook, Mona Lisa Smile, Forrest Gump, Father of the Bride, Pearl Harbor, A Walk to Remember, and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Now it’s your turn, choose a question or two and tell me your answer!
I’d love to learn more about you all!

fun facts friday

Happy Friday!!

Some things to catch up on….

1.  First and foremost, I’d like to share that I officially have a new job!!  After the long (and often frustrating) hunt, I get to work in a school that seems like the perfect fit for me.  I’ll be the lead 4- and 5-year-old preschool teacher at the church J and I have attended for a couple of weeks now.  It’s a Christian-based curriculum, so I’ll have the chance to pray with my students, discover Bible stories, and learn how numbers, letters, math, etc. I feel so incredibly blessed and cannot wait to begin!
It’s true that you just have to keep praying and trust Him!

Oh, and seeing “Mrs. Buss” listed under the “Meet the Teacher Night” schedule gives me little butterflies…so cute and exciting :)

2.  On Tuesday, my Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Ken came to visit for a few hours and along with them they brought an old china hutch that belonged to my great-grandmother and the piano (!) my Grandma bought when my mom was just five years old and beginning to take lessons.  They’re doing some remodeling right now and had to get rid of a few old things to make room for new ones.  I’m so thankful they hauled them all the way here, and I’m so happy to have them!  I spent a good hour playing this morning.

3.  I’d like to wish a big Congratulations to Emily (practically my blog twin) as she gets married this weekend!!  Soak it all in and enjoy every moment, girl!

4.  Currently reading: The Skinny Rules by Bob Harper

Have any of you read this yet?  I’m about half way through, and I’ll do a review of it when I’m done.

Speaking of reading, you should find me on Goodreads!

5.  If you read healthy living blogs then you’ve probably seen a few pictures of homemade banana soft serve floating around lately.  I’ve frozen a few bananas and I’m taking a go at my own version this afternoon.  Is it ridiculous that I’m super excited about it?? (don’t answer that.)
**I’ll be sure to share the recipe/how-to if it turns out well!

6.  A few healthy living articles I’ve read this past week, may be useful to you, too!

{source}

7.  I registered for my second Half Marathon!!  I’ll be running 13.1 miles on Sunday, October 21st!
I picked up a copy of this month’s Runner World magazine since it’s the “Half Marathon Special.”  I figure I can use all the help I can get :)

*****

What are you reading right now?

Any piano players out there?

Are you currently registered/training for any races?

where to start…

Good morning!!

Well I’ve definitely been absent from the blog for a while…I was a little distracted for most of that time but I’m starting to really miss blogging now so I’m happy to be back!

It’s hard to know where to start.  You could say that a lot has happened around here in the past few weeks.

I’ve decided to wait to do my wedding recaps until I get the pictures back from the photographer, so those posts will come as soon as I can get pictures organized (and obviously I can’t wait to see them!!).

For today, I thought we could just catch up on a few things other than all that wedding mumbo-jumbo :)

  • We’re in our new home now and working on unpacking, not just our things that we brought from our old apartment but all of our wedding gifts as well.  It’s a slow process but we’re continuing to just love this place. It’ll be so fun to repaint, decorate, and add furniture to it over the course of this next year.  (I’ll eventually show some before and after pictures too!)
  • I have a new baby cousin!  Ian was born on Tuesday and I get to meet him this weekend!  For those of you who don’t know me at all should know that I absolutely love babies (<–this is possibly the understatement of the century).  Anything and everything baby related = love.  Jesse and I already went shopping for Ian’s gift :)

I can hardly stand to just look at this adorableness…can’t wait to hold him!!

  • Does anyone know how to preserve wedding flowers/bouquets?  I may have forgotten to let mine hang upside down while we were on our honeymoon (the only way I know how to preserve them) and instead left it in its water vase.  This is what they look like right now:

    just dried up….any suggestions?
  • I’d like to wish a huge congratulations to my aunt Kari who ran another marathon this past weekend and got an amazing PR… 3:43!!!  simply amazing…so proud of you!

  • While on our honeymoon, working out and eating clean/healthy foods definitely took a backseat.  I’m not saying I regret that necessarily because you only get to take that trip once, but working out again now this week definitely sucks after time off and eating fairly crappy.

    When in Rome….err, Chicago…

  • J and I get to go to our friends’ wedding this Saturday!  I love weddings, especially when I don’t have to be the center of attention at it haha
  • Happy (belated) birthday to my sister Brooke

    and my Dad Rich!

I hope you both had a wonderful day yesterday!  Love you!
  • Jesse and I got a new (beautiful) grill for our wedding! (thank you Jim & Marcia!!)  We’re both so stoked to start using it.  I’m dreaming of grilling sweet potatoes, pizzas, bananas, peaches, and the list goes on…
